Young Nation: TAP Gallery is now open!

The TAP (The Alley Project) Gallery led by artist Erik Howard was dedicated on July 4, 2011. TAP includes a garage that houses a studio, gallery space, two lots that provide a common art space for neighbors and artists, bike racks for youth traveling on two wheels, and a walking gallery along an alley that spans one city block with murals on garages and other surfaces. This space was created for youth and community members to create, show, and see street art in a way that is legal, safe and supports learning and relationships.

TAP Gallery’s mission is to be a place to facilitate and support creative expression, positive youth-adult partnerships, structure, and community responsibility. This project is important to the community because art is a powerful youth and community development tool and because a space that is safe and culturally and developmentally appropriate is an invaluable community asset. TAP Gallery, realizing these truths, has built in supports toward engagement, empowerment, and diversity so that each participating resident, youth, and artist is getting something and giving back to the community at the same time. We are excited about TAP Gallery’s beginning, because as artist Erik expressed,

This space supports inter-generational relationships, mentoring, safety, art, partnerships, expression, youth development, art competencies, structure, and most of all it inspires action.

You can find the TAP Gallery in the Southwest community in the alley between Avis and Falcon on the block between Woodmere & Elsmere.

CPA Detroit will be at the Summit!

To honor founder Rose Skillman’s legacy, and celebrate 50 years of being a voice for Detroit children, the Skillman Foundation will host a 50th-anniversary-themed Kids Matter Here Summit II. We’ll have exciting updates on our Good Neighborhoods and Good Schools work. We’ll have food and music. We’ll have important information for families about excellent schools and preparing kids for college. And most importantly, we’ll have our family of Detroit nonprofits that make everything we do possible.

We will be there with information about our programs and projects. Stop by to see us and get your picture taken to put on a postcard to send to the City of Detroit in support of the arts!

The event is at Ford Field in Detroit from 10am – 4pm

Whatever your artistic passion, don’t miss out – apply.
Why? Selected artists will be listed in The Artist Roster. A big deal, because it’s a resource for people looking for pre-qualified local artists to design and coordinate public art projects. Past budgets have been as high as $40,000!

Printed and searchable online profiles will be readily available to C+PA, civic leaders, community groups and more – locally and around the world. So when project initiators are looking for the right artist to hire, they’ll have access to the experience, specialties and work samples of everyone on The Artist Roster.
